About Dave

Dave Ray is a 1980 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, with a BS in Systems Engineering, and is a 28 year Navy veteran. He grew up in the Boston area and made San Diego his new home in 1981.

He opened his first business (Photography by Aldo) in 1991, while staying active in the Naval Reserves, creating portraits and wedding photographs throughout San Diego County.  (Fun fact: "Aldo" was his "callsign" in the Navy.)

He later used his Navy experience working as a government contractor for 18 years crafting and presenting tactical war games to deploying Navy and Marine Corps forces.  While there, he would lead or co-lead 100's of planning meetings and briefings to senior military leaders.

In 2016, he opened Mind Masters South Bay, adding Dave Ray Coaching and Consulting in 2022. Dave helps business professionals and small business owners to harness the power of public speaking and presenting to propel their careers, become known as the "go-to" person in their company, land that next big promotion or become the PR guru for their company. Dave says, "Everyone is a public speaker." He helps mid-level executives become senior executives through the power of confident, fun and engaging presenting in any situation.

His first book, Verbal Vigilante, came out in October 2022. In it, Dave shows business professionals (as well as everyday people) how to communicate powerfully with influence and persuasion to get what they want using secrets and techniques he has amassed over the last 40 years.

Verbal Vigilante says what it promises to say. It has tips and tricks on how to write powerful letters and articles. It has a number of paired words that are frequently mixed up, (I learned the reason behind the difference of e.g. and i.e.) Best of all, it has the best checklist for writing projects I've ever seen. Definitely a book that I will keep in my office and share with friends.

Even if you think you learned everything you need to know about grammar back in elementary school, even if you think no one, including someone reading a resume, doesn't really care all that much about correct word usage, and even if you do love grammar and words and silently correct misuse when you hear it, I guarantee you will find something enlightening in this little gem of a book."
